Best Time to Visit Victoria Falls: High Water vs Low Water, Month by Month

Key Takeaways

  • There is no bad time to visit Victoria Falls, just two very different falls: high water (roughly February to June) and low water (roughly September to December).
  • High water brings the biggest spray, roaring volume and rainbows, but the mist can hide the view and soak you.
  • Low water shows the rock face and gorges more clearly and is generally better for white water rafting.
  • A helicopter flight, sunset cruise and guided tour work all year.
  • Book around what you want to do, not just what you want to see.

The best time to visit Victoria Falls depends on which version of the falls you want to see. Mosi-oa-Tunya, “The Smoke That Thunders”, changes dramatically through the year as the Zambezi rises and falls. Short answer: come whenever you don’t mind getting wet. The longer answer, month by month and activity by activity, is below.

When is the best time to visit Victoria Falls?

For the most powerful falls, visit at high water, roughly February to June, when the Zambezi carries the rains from upstream and peaks around March to May. For clearer views of the rock face and the best conditions for adventure activities, visit at low water, roughly September to December. July and August sit in between: strong flow, less spray and comfortable dry-season weather.

The falls straddle the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Most of the main falls face the Zimbabwe side, where our guided tour of Victoria Falls runs through the rainforest.

Best for Sheer power and photos from the air A balanced first visit Rafting and clear rock views

The best time for each activity

Seeing the falls on foot

The rainforest walk on the Zimbabwe side is spectacular all year, but very different. At peak flow you may barely see the far side through the spray, and you’ll come out drenched; rent or bring a raincoat and protect your phone. From around July the views open up. Our guided tour of the falls ($30) runs all year, and your guide will know the best viewpoints for the conditions on the day.

Helicopter flights

A flight works in every season, and at high water it’s the best way to see the falls without the spray in your face. Our Victoria Falls helicopter flight is $170 for 13 minutes or $330 for 25 minutes. Read our helicopter tour guide for what you’ll see from the air.

White water rafting

Rafting in the Batoka Gorge depends on the river level. When the water is very high, some sections can’t be run safely, so the low-water months, roughly from the second half of the year until the rains, are generally the classic rafting season. Check conditions for your dates when you book our white water rafting trip ($170), and see our rafting guide.

Sunset cruises

The upper Zambezi is calm above the falls all year, so a Zambezi sunset cruise ($85) or a sunset dinner cruise ($118) is a safe bet in any season. Dry-season evenings tend to have the clearest skies.

Wildlife and day trips

Wildlife viewing in the nearby parks is best in the dry season, roughly May to October, when animals gather at water and the bush thins out. That’s the best time to add a Chobe day trip from Victoria Falls or a Hwange day trip.

Victoria Falls month by month

  • January–February: rainy season, green and lush; the river is rising fast.
  • March–May: peak flow. Maximum spray, thunder and rainbows; bring waterproofs.
  • June: still very full, with drier, cooler weather arriving.
  • July–August: a sweet spot. Strong flow, less mist, dry and mild days; a popular time to visit.
  • September: water dropping, rock face appearing; warm and dry.
  • October–November: lowest water and hottest weather; prime rafting and the clearest views of the gorge.
  • December: rains return, the landscape turns green, and the river starts to rise again.

How many days should you spend at Victoria Falls?

Three nights is a good minimum: one day for the falls and a sunset cruise, one for an adventure activity or helicopter flight, and one for a day trip to Chobe or Hwange. To add a full safari, our 5-day Victoria Falls & Chobe safari and 5-day Victoria Falls & Hwange safari combine the falls with two of the region’s best wildlife areas.

Planning tips

  • Pack a rain jacket from February to July; you will get wet on the falls walk.
  • Protect your phone and camera with a waterproof pouch at high water.
  • Go early for the walk and the best light, before the midday heat in October and November.
  • Book popular activities ahead in July and August.
  • Bring US dollars: they’re widely used in Victoria Falls.
